FOIL GALLERY is pleased to announce a solo exhibition "Object
Reading" by Ryoko Aoki.
Mixing two dimensional paper works and objects' spatial installation,
Ryoko Aoki will present both her masterpieces and latest works
she newly created for this show. This will be the first solo exhibition
after four years break since her last solo show in Tokyo.
With her signature use of botanic or landscape motifs and of
lines forming map like objects, Kyoto based painter Ryoko Aoki's
works has created her own unique, pop, but cynical floating wonderland
full of mysterious humor. While her coincidentally launching first
book "Chain Ring" is re-composed from her extensive
existing works and expresses the theme of "Linking"
on the paper, in this exhibition, Ryoko Aoki tries to bear rhythmical
possibility of her wonderland by installing some three dimensional
objects in between the drawing works as if making a chain ring.
Jumping out from a piece of paper, this lightly performing installation
at FOIL GALLERY reinforces the unique and spacious charms of the
Ryoko Aoki (b. 1973) lives and works in Kyoto, Japan. Her works
have been widely viewed through a major group exhibition featuring
leading japanese artists "Winter Garden: The Exploration of the
Micropop Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art", exhibited
in Tokyo in 2009 and now touring abroad, as well as Documenta
12 in 2007 to name. An upcoming exhibition at The National Museum
of Art, Osaka in 2010 has been scheduled, she is undoubtedly one
of the most anticipated artists of her generation.
