FOIL GALLERY is pleased to announce Anat Parnass photo exhibition "FAR AWAY FROM (HERE)" from 4th to 19th February, 2011.

While studying photography at Nihon University Graduate School of Art, Israeli photographer Anat Parnass has produced her works both in Japan and Israel. In this exhibition, photographs taken in these two countries will be symmetrically displayed.

Living in Tokyo, she says, has been asking her a question of "where is HERE". In the background, there is a sense of incongruity she's been suffering, by the misconception or incorrect information on her homeland, Islael, widely spread in Japan. For instance, people might immediately associate with dispute between Palestine when hearing the name of Israel, however, people in Israel actually go to office or school everyday, young people go to night clubs for fun: they lead their ordinary life, just like the way we do in Japan.
Although there is some cultural differences of course, such everyday life and surrounding scenery in Japan is, for Parnass, nothing different from that of in Israel. Both are her ordinary everydays.
Assuming from Japanese point of view, however, she confronts questions of why the actual Israeli situation have not been conveyed to Japan? What distinguishes "here" and "there"? And in which point people would find differences between Japan and Israel, where people have never been to, after all?

By placing images of Japan and Israel symmetrically in this exhibition, Anat Parnass calls attention to the ambiguous border between the two country's ordinary life. Crossing from here to their in Parnass' work, the viewers will also confront the question where your "HERE" belongs to.
