This is a full record of the exhibition “Visitor” by Peter McDonald presented both in the museum and our daily life.
The artist who has been pursuing painting on his own develops various events through meetings with “visitors”.
The art project, which was held at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa from April 2011 to March 2012, will finally be published as a book.
At the exhibition “Salon”, McDonald exchanged one-to-one dialogues with museum visitors by sending them a total of 1044 pieces of drawings in response to letters dropped into a mailbox placed at the exhibition room.
In another gallery “Disco” at the museum, McDonald and volunteer members unfurled a painting on walls of the room, which is a total of seventy meters in length. Various programs were held inside the space “disco”, supplying many artists, museum visitors, and project members a place for innovative expressions through physical performances and musical sessions. McDonald also worked on projects outside the museum. The piece “Scroll Story” with motifs from Japanese traditional art presented at Kanazawa Noh Museum shows an encounter leaping over cultural differences. There was great communication happening with unexpected kind of people through exhibitions held at unlikely places such as a cafe, a cycle shop and the like opposed to ordinary exhibition styles. A total of more than a hundred drawings called “Kanazawa Drawings” created by McDonald with inspirations gained through the meetings with people and those new experiences.
The record shows how paintings kept developing their spaces for expressions, easily crossing over a border of genres, nationalities, cultures, usual and unusual, by having direct dialogues with visitors that McDonald met.
